China launches third aircraft carrier

Published On: 20. Juni 2022 4:05

On Friday China launched its third aircraft carrier as part of the Chinese navys efforts to modernise and expand its fleet.

President Xi Jinping has during his time in office made it a major priority to expand and modernise China’s armed forces, including developing a modern navy which can project power far beyond China’s shores. Currently only the American and British navies have the ability to deploy significant naval power far from their home bases.

The new Chinese carrier is called Fujian, named after the Chinese province which sits just opposite the de-facto independent island of Taiwan. China has sought reunification with Taiwan ever since the end of the Chinese civil war in 1949.

China now has three aircraft carriers. This is the second largest number in any navy in the world.  Eleven aircraft carriers are operated by the United States.
