South Korea launches first moon orbiter

Published On: 7. August 2022 4:00

South Korea has launched its first lunar orbiter probe on Friday, in a major step forward for South Korea’s space programme. The Korea Pathfinder Lunar Orbiter was launched on a Space X Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral in Florida.

“Analysis of the received information confirmed … [the probe] was operating normally,” Vice Science Minister Oh Tae-Seog told a briefing.

The probe is expected to enter the moon’s orbit in December and will collect data on the moon for the next year, focused on finding a landing site and testing space internet technology.

South Korea plans to land a probe on the surface of the moon by 2030.

With this probe South Korea joins China, India, the U.S., the EU and Japan as countries with lunar probes.
