Kenyan election result could head for court

Published On: 24. August 2022 4:00

The results of the recently concluded Kenyan election are being challenged in court.

Raila Odinga, who lost to William Ruto, filed a petition this week to challenge the result and demanding that the poll be rerun.

Official results showed that Ruto, the current deputy president, had won a narrow victory over Odinga, winning 50.5% of the vote over Odinga’s 48.9%.

Ruto’s political party, Kenya Kwanza, also managed a narrow victory in the country’s Parliament, winning 170 of the 334 seats up for grabs.

Odinga’s petition to the court claimed that there had been major irregularities and that the results should be nullified.

The country’s supreme court will have seven days to consider Odinga’s challenge. If it finds in his favour the country will have to rerun the election within 60 days. There is some precedent for this, with the previous Kenyan election, in 2017, having to be rerun following allegations of cheating and rigging. In that election it had also been Odinga who lost and challenged the result. He also lost the rerun of the election against current president, Uhuru Kenyatta.

The decision by Odinga to challenge the result could see rising instability in the country, which has been affected by political violence over election results in the past.
