Kenya deploys troops to Congo
Kenya’s recently elected president, William Ruto, has ordered the deployment of Kenyan troops to the Eastern regions of the Democratic Republic of Congo to join an East African task force which hopes to secure peace in the troubled region.
The seven countries of the East African Community (EAC), which Congo joined this year, agreed in April to set up a joint force to fight militia groups in the country’s troubled eastern regions.
The region is already host to the largest United Nations peacekeeping force. However over 120 armed groups continue to operate across the country. These include an affiliate of the “Islamic State”.
