Ramaphosa leaves fate to NEC, prepares to challenge Phala Phala report

Published On: 5. Dezember 2022 3:00

President Cyril Ramaphosa says his fate is in the hands of the ANC’s National Executive Committee (NEC), whose meeting today he was due to attend.

Ramaphosa was speaking to journalists yesterday after being recused from attending the ruling party’s National Working Committee, on the grounds that he was the subject of discussion and that, as per ANC convention, it was preferable to remove himself to allow the frankest discussion among committee members.

Meanwhile, News24 reports that Ramaphosa’s lawyer, Peter Harris, confirmed that the president would go to the Constitutional Court to challenge the section 89 panel report which disbelieved his account of the Phala Phala break-in.

Last week, the independent panel, headed by former chief justice Sandile Ngcobo, found that Cyril Ramaphosa had a case to answer in relation to the Phala Phala break-in.

The panel was wholly unconvinced by Ramaphosa’s account of the theft of some $580 000 from a couch in a room on Ramaphosa’s game farm in February 2020 – and did not accept his claims that the money had been the proceeds of a buffalo sale.

According to News24, the report paved the way for the president to face an impeachment inquiry over allegations of serious misconduct and the flouting of anti-corruption laws.

News24 said that in response to questions, Peter Harris said yesterday: ‘We received instructions some days ago from the president to take the panel’s report and recommendations contained therein on review to the Constitutional Court. Papers will be filed shortly.’
