Balenciaga Has First Runway Show Since BDSM-Themed Photo Shoot Scandal

Published On: 7. März 2023 0:36

Balenciaga held its first runway show since the photo shoot scandal that included children holding teddy bears in BDSM-themed attire.

The fashion house’s Fall 2023 show in Paris on Sunday was noticeably different, with no celebrity guests or theatrics of any kind, The New York Times reported.

The event was held at the old Carrousel du Louvre, in a portion of the museum with plain white spaces. The fashion designer, who goes by the name Demna, went back to just clothing. The items offered included trousers-as-trench coats, puffers, and denim and leather jackets.

There were long, flowing, floral numbers, some with sleeves almost hitting the floor. And lastly, the designer offered shimmering evening floor-length gowns in silver and black.

In a Balenciaga show note shared on Twitter, Demna appeared to comment on the scandal. The designer wrote that “fashion” can “no longer be seen as an entertainment…”

“Fashion has become a kind of entertainment, but often that part overshadows the essence of it, which lays in shapes and volumes, silhouettes, the way we create relationships between the body and fabric, the way we make shoulder lines and armholes, the way clothes have an ability to change us,” the note reads.

“In the last couple of months, I needed to seek shelter for my love affair with fashion and I instinctively found it in the process of making clothes,” it added. “…This is what fashion to me can no longer be seen as an entertainment, but rather as the art of making clothes.”

In November, Demna and Balenciaga’s President and CEO Cédric Charbit came under fire after its website displayed images featuring its “Toy Stories” campaign that showed child models posing with teddy bear handbags, with the bears dressed in bondage gear.

The fashion house apologized and said it was taking legal action against its production company in charge of the ad campaign. Later, reports surfaced that Balenciaga had dropped its $25 million lawsuit against the producers of the fetish-themed shoot, the New York Post noted.

In December, Demna issued an apology in a since-deleted statement on Instagram, saying, “I want to personally apologize for the wrong artistic choice of concept for the gifting campaign with the kids and I take my responsibility.”

“It was inappropriate to have kids promote objects that had nothing to do with them.”
