Masses“ are said to have „paralyzed Vienna“ during the climate activists‘ demonstration last Friday, with the organizers claiming „20,000 demonstrators“. However, eXXpress can now reveal that only 7,000 people actually participated in the protest. This discrepancy raises concerns about the accuracy of reported participant numbers in demonstrations. The Vienna Police Department has recently decided to stop releasing data on demonstration attendance due to unwarranted attacks and criticism. This decision was prompted by previous incidents, such as the May 1st, 2022 demonstration, where the SPÖ claimed „100,000 visitors“ while the police counted only 2,000, a difference of 98,000. It is important to note that even 7,000 participants in a demonstration is not a failure, but it is significantly less than the reported 20,000.
The organizers of the recent climate strike in Vienna surprised the media with their claim of „20,000 demonstrators“ during the march. However, upon closer inspection, doubts arose about the accuracy of this number. The eXXpress team, which has covered numerous demonstrations in the past, noticed that the ranks of the protesters were sparse, with frequent gaps and open spaces at the Vienna Heldenplatz. In order to uncover the true number of participants, the eXXpress team investigated further and a police insider revealed that there were actually 7,000 people at the demonstration on Friday. This is less than a third of the number reported by the organizers.
It is surprising that only 7,000 people participated in this „large-scale demonstration“ organized by the climate activists, especially considering the efforts made to mobilize school classes to join the protest. The protest was even classified as a school event by the Vienna Education Directorate. However, it seems that many students and other Austrians were not convinced to participate in a protest movement that has already faced criticism. Some climate activists have been caught vacationing in places like Bali or the Maldives, despite advocating against CO2 emissions. Additionally, the increasingly disruptive and tedious climate sticker campaigns, which block the movement of craftsmen, delivery drivers, emergency vehicles, and buses, have also annoyed many Austrians and Germans
