SA economy could be growing faster than originally thought
Data from bank transactions in the first three months of the year could indicate that the economy is growing faster than was initially thought.
An analysis showed that interbank payments grew by 3.9% in the second quarter of the year, compared to the period of January to March. Economists polled had, on average, given an estimate of an expansion of 1.2%.
The growth or decline in interbank payments shows a strong correlation with broader economic activity. Strong growth in these payments likely reflects increasing economic activity.
However, on a month-to-month basis, the index fell between May and June. This was attributed to the rise in food and fuel prices, as well as the impact of Eskom’s power problems.
