Smith to head up new T20 comp
Graeme Smith, the former Proteas captain who also recently served as the Director of Cricket for Cricket South Africa (CSA), will head up a new T20 league, due to begin in January.
CSA announced that Smith, who served as Director of Cricket from 2019 until March this year, would have the position of ‘Commissioner’ of the league. Matches will be played in January and February.
Smith would have oversight of all aspects of the league, cricketing and non-cricketing, CSA said.
Smith was quoted as saying: ‘I’m extremely honoured to be entrusted with leading this exciting new venture. I’m deeply committed to South African cricket and happy to serve the game as best I can. I’m excited by the opportunity to deliver the new league, which I believe will be an extremely competitive product, one that can bring the much-needed investment into the game and provide new opportunities for players around the world and, more importantly, to our SA home grown talent.’
Initial reports indicate that the six franchises have all been bought by investors who currently own Indian Premier League teams, but this has yet to be confirmed.
