SA population reaches 60.6 million
The population of South Africa is now estimated to be 60.6 million. This is according to the latest figures released by Stats SA, which published its annual mid-year population estimates this week.
Gauteng is the country’s most populous province, with 16.1 million. It is followed by KwaZulu-Natal, which has 11.5 million people, while the Western Cape has 7.2 million people. The province with the fewest people is the Northern Cape, with 1.3 million people.
The figures also show that about 8.5 million people in the country are HIV-positive, including about a fifth of people aged 15-49.
After a slight dip as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, life expectancy is once again rising. It is just over 60 for men and 65.6 for women.
