Iran denies plot to kill senior US officials
The US Justice Department filed charges this week against a member of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) for allegedly plotting to assassinate former national security advisor John Bolton and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
The accused is a 45-year-old Iranian named Shahram Poursafi.
According to prosecutors, in October 2021 Poursafi tried to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars to several individuals in the United States to carry out the attacks. This was supposedly in retaliation for the US missile strike in 2020 which killed IRGC commander Qasem Soleimani, who was visiting Iranian-backed militias in Iraq at the time of his death.
Iran’s foreign ministry described the alleged plot as a series of ‘threadbare myths’, and denied the allegations.
Current US national security advisor Jake Sullivan said that Iran would face ‘serious consequences’ if it carried out an attack against any US citizen.
