‘Goblin mode’ word of the year
The word of the year for 2022 has been announced as ‘goblin mode’.
This is according to the lexicographers who compile the Oxford dictionary.
‘Goblin mode’ means to indulge in ‘unapologetically self-indulgent, lazy, slovenly, or greedy’ behaviour.
The phrase was one of the three put forward for the public to vote on. It was also the first time that the word of the year was chosen by the public.
According to the BBC ‘goblin mode’ was by far the most popular word, with over 90% of the more than 300 000 people who voted choosing the phrase as the word of the year.
The other two candidates for word of the year were ‘metaverse’ and a hashtag: #IStandWith.
