Necrotizing Encephalitis and Myocarditis with Multiple Foci Following BNT162b2 mRNA COVID-19 Vaccination | Advocating for Science and Unity

Published On: 11. Mai 2023 8:37

Introduction

A recent case report published in the Journal of Neurology describes a rare and severe adverse reaction to the BNT162b2 mRNA COVID-19 vaccine. The report details the case of a 61-year-old woman who developed multifocal necrotizing encephalitis and myocarditis after receiving the vaccine. This is the first reported case of this particular adverse reaction to the vaccine.

Case Details

The patient received her first dose of the BNT162b2 mRNA vaccine in January 2021 and experienced mild symptoms such as fatigue and headache. However, 10 days after receiving her second dose, she developed a fever and was admitted to the hospital. She then experienced seizures and was transferred to the intensive care unit.

Imaging studies revealed multifocal necrotizing lesions in the patient’s brain, and a biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of necrotizing encephalitis. The patient also had evidence of myocarditis, with elevated levels of troponin and abnormal electrocardiogram findings.

Discussion

While the BNT162b2 mRNA vaccine has been shown to be safe and effective in clinical trials and real-world use, rare adverse reactions can occur. This case report highlights the importance of continued monitoring and reporting of adverse reactions to vaccines.

It is unclear why this patient developed multifocal necrotizing encephalitis and myocarditis after receiving the vaccine. It is possible that the patient had an underlying autoimmune disorder that predisposed her to this reaction, or that the vaccine triggered an autoimmune response. Further research is needed to understand the mechanisms behind this adverse reaction.

In conclusion, while rare, severe adverse reactions to the BNT162b2 mRNA COVID-19 vaccine can occur. It is important for healthcare providers to be aware of these potential reactions and to report them to the appropriate authorities. Continued monitoring and research will be necessary to fully understand the risks and benefits of COVID-19 vaccines
