The other day Doug Henwood reminded me of the fabulous opening to Dwight MacDonald’s book The Men and the Millions, an exposé of the world’s biggest and most devious philanthropic enterprise: “The Ford Foundation is a large body of money completely surrounded by people who want some.” I’m no expert at raising money (which is why I’m reduced to writing these pleas), but I was never naive enough to stand outside the Ford, Rockefeller or Pew foundations with a begging bowl hoping to land some.
