Notwendige Ausgaben“: Taxpayers finance Merkel’s makeup artist

Altkanzlerin Angela Merkel is accompanied by an expensive stylist on her travels. Not only with Baerbock: The costs for former Chancellor Merkel’s stylist are also high. The Taxpayers‘ Association, meanwhile, advises on alternative financing.

BERLIN. The Federal Chancellery continues to pay for a makeup artist for former Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) even after the end of her political career, using taxpayer funds. This was revealed in an email correspondence that the Chancellery had to release based on the Freedom of Information Act (IFG), as reported by the Tagesspiegel. On several occasions, a freelance fashion designer from Berlin accompanied the 69-year-old on her trips and enhanced Merkel’s face and hairstyle – at the expense of the federal budget. According to the Tagesspiegel, the Chancellery reaffirmed the legal legitimacy, stating that these were „necessary expenses“ for the „perception of ongoing official duties“. The Chancellery paid 505 euros per hotel night for Merkel’s assistant and stylist due to the „representative nature“ of the trip. During a trip to Geneva, the stylist occupied a room for around 340 euros per night. This was actually too expensive, given a price cap of 197 euros.

Merkel is not an isolated case. „It is difficult to justify to taxpayers that they should also pay for makeup artists and hairstylists for politicians,“ said Reiner Holznagel, President of the Taxpayers‘ Association, to the Tagesspiegel. Such costs must be reduced and „if necessary, paid privately“. In April, the Taxpayers‘ Association already criticized the „Savings Book for the Federal Budget 2023“ for wasting millions of euros by the state: for expensive makeup artists, photographers, unnecessary appointees, and lavish Chancellery buildings. The association also criticized Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens) for her expensive makeup artist, for whom the Foreign Ministry paid around 137,000 euros. (ca)
