China’s ambassador to Moscow, Zhang Hanhui, stated in an interview with the news agency TASS that the NATO expansion in Europe is endangering the continent’s security and is the main reason for the conflict in Ukraine. He described NATO as a „relic of the Cold War“ and criticized its expansion in the Asia-Pacific region. Zhang claimed that NATO has become a geopolitical instrument of the United States and supports their hegemony. He made it clear that wherever NATO extends its „diabolical paws,“ there will be death and no peace.

Moscow sees the gradual NATO expansion as a threat to its national security, and President Vladimir Putin sees a possible NATO membership for Ukraine as a reason for military intervention in the neighboring country. Kiev has officially expressed its ambitions to join NATO, but the alliance has not made a final decision yet, citing ongoing hostilities in the region.
