Once again, costs of 500,000 euros are likely to be incurred for invitations, organization, hall rental, presentation, and catering. This means that the SPÖ has managed to spend 1.2 million euros alone for its own party events in just one year – after all, these are membership fees, donations, and also taxpayer money from party financing. Andreas Babler now wants a second, an „ordinary“ party conference. The eXXpress requested an official statement from the SPÖ federal party leadership regarding the costs, but the response was very brief: „We do not provide information on accounting data.“ For long-standing SPÖ members, it is clear even without further statement from the party leadership: It is not good that such large sums are already being spent on the party itself just a few months before a major battle in 2024. These funds could then be missing for the important election campaign – the FPÖ and ÖVP have been particularly frugal with their party funds this year, and the strategists of both factions are planning a massive use of their resources next year. Perhaps the SPÖ leadership also hopes that the upcoming ordinary party conference in November will improve the poll numbers for the top candidate: while Pamela Rendi-Wagner reached 20.7% in the chancellor question last summer, Andreas Babler currently only achieves 15%. In this respect, someone in the SPÖ could now question the meaningfulness of the entire investment in two party conferences and a member vote totaling 1.2 million euros
