Politicians, authorities, and mainstream media are once again sounding the alarm in their usual manner. „Coronavirus Eris: Karl Lauterbach warns of a new variant,“ the „Welt“ headlines. The „Bild“ also joins in the panic orchestra: „Due to a new variant – Lauterbach warns again about Corona.“ The „Hamburger Morgenpost“ reports: „First hospital in the north imposes new corona mask requirement.“ Due to several corona cases, the University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein has imposed a mask requirement for the emergency room and admission ward in Kiel, the newspaper writes. And it immediately prepares its readers for further measures: „Will the corona mask requirement return in Hamburg? This is what the city and hospitals say,“ reads the headline of another article. Further down, the reason is revealed: „73 PCR-confirmed corona cases registered in Hamburg last week.“ 73 positive tests in a city with 1.8 million inhabitants. And what a fuss! What the fearmongers withhold from their readers can at least be read on MDR: „Corona and no end in sight? A new variant is spreading in Mallorca. However, there seems to be no cause for concern, according to the World Health Organization. Virologist Klaus Stöhr also considers it medically irrelevant.“ Stöhr is the counterpart to Lauterbach and Drosten. A serious, thoughtful physician and scientist who is a stranger to panic. Stöhr is a highly respected virologist in the scientific community; in June 2022, he replaced Drosten on the expert committee. He worked for the World Health Organization (WHO) for 15 years, including as head of the Global Influenza Program, SARS research coordinator, and head of global pandemic preparedness. When asked by the MDR journalist, „Is there a new corona outbreak in Mallorca, or would that be too much to say?“ Stöhr replied, „That would be too much to say. Even in summer, the coronavirus circulates like other respiratory pathogens, but at a very low level in the northern hemisphere, the northern hemisphere. It’s a different story in the south. The respiratory season is in full swing there. Influenza is also out in Australia, and other viruses are causing many more outbreaks there. We do find the occasional case here, but we can’t really speak of outbreaks.“ On the question of the role the new subvariant currently plays in Mallorca, the professor replied, „Variants always arise. The RNA virus is genetically unstable. There are hundreds, thousands that arise here every week or month. In this respect, Stöhr seems to be mistaken. Because politically and in the media, the new variant seems to be of interest.
