Canada’s parliament has elected Greg Fergus as its first black speaker, following the resignation of his predecessor over the public celebration of a Ukrainian veteran who fought for the Nazis. Fergus, a Liberal MP, emphasized the importance of respect among lawmakers in order to foster dialogue. As speaker, his role is to chair debates and enforce parliamentary rules while remaining impartial. Fergus was accompanied into the House of Commons by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and opposition leader Pierre Poilievre, as is customary. Trudeau congratulated Fergus on being the first black Canadian to hold the position, stating that it should serve as inspiration for younger generations interested in politics. Fergus, who was elected to Parliament in 2015, founded the parliamentary black caucus and previously served as Trudeau’s parliamentary secretary. His main task as speaker will be to restore the chamber’s honor, according to Jagmeet Singh, the leader of the New Democrats.
