Butler’s appointment was also highlighted for her experience as a senior adviser to Vice President Kamala Harris and for being the first openly LGBTQ person and black lesbian to represent California in the Senate. Although some raised concerns about Butler’s residency in Maryland, a spokesperson for Newsom confirmed that she is a longtime California resident who temporarily moved to the D.C. area for her role at EMILY’s List but has since re-registered to vote in California.

Barbara Lee, and former Los Angeles Dodger Steve Garvey, who is running as a Republican, are competing for the Senate seat. Former Los Angeles news anchor Christina Pascucci also announced her candidacy as an independent Democrat, aiming to appeal to California’s Latino population and undecided voters while positioning herself as a moderate consensus builder. Financial figures from the Federal Election Commission show that Schiff has about $32 million, Porter has $12 million, and Lee has $1.3 million in their campaign funds.
