Laphonza Butler wird nicht für den Sitz von Sen. Feinstein im Jahr 2024 kandidieren

Senator Laphonza Butler (D-CA), who replaced the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein, announced that she will not run for a full term in the upcoming election. After serving in the congressional seat for only two weeks, Butler stated that she has spent the past 16 days reflecting on the kind of life she wants to have and the kind of service she wants to offer. She believes that winning a campaign does not always mean it is the right decision to run. Butler, who previously served as the president of the pro-abortion group EMILY’s List, expressed her intention to be a strong advocate for California during her remaining term, but ultimately decided that the position is not the best use of her voice.

California Governor Gavin Newsom appointed Butler to fill Feinstein’s seat following her death, without any limitations or preconditions on her running for the seat in 2024. Newsom had previously promised to appoint a black woman to the role if Feinstein retired early. Butler’s appointment was also highlighted for her experience as a senior adviser to Vice President Kamala Harris and for being the first openly LGBTQ person and black lesbian to represent California in the Senate. Although some raised concerns about Butler’s residency in Maryland, a spokesperson for Newsom confirmed that she is a longtime California resident who temporarily moved to the D.C. area for her role at EMILY’s List but has since re-registered to vote in California.

Without Butler in the race, top Democrats like Rep. Adam Schiff, Rep. Katie Porter, Rep. Barbara Lee, and former Los Angeles Dodger Steve Garvey, who is running as a Republican, are competing for the Senate seat. Former Los Angeles news anchor Christina Pascucci also announced her candidacy as an independent Democrat, aiming to appeal to California’s Latino population and undecided voters while positioning herself as a moderate consensus builder. Financial figures from the Federal Election Commission show that Schiff has about $32 million, Porter has $12 million, and Lee has $1.3 million in their campaign funds. The primary election for the seat is scheduled for March 5, and the top two candidates with the most votes will advance to the general election
