Emir von Katar demütigt Steinmeier“ – Headlines like these can currently be found in many critical media outlets. The general consensus: The head of state of the Gulf state made the Federal President wait at the airport, thereby expressing his lack of respect for the incumbent and our country. I do not consider myself the owner of the truth. But I think it is important to question supposed certainties. And in this specific case, a completely different version of events in distant Qatar does not seem entirely implausible to me. That’s why I don’t want to withhold it from you. In fact, it seems undisputed that the government plane of the Federal President arrived at its destination unusually early. What is not the norm in this regard is that German government planes often do not even reach their destination. Whether it is sensible for our supposedly climate-conscious President to arrive in his own plane and not by commercial flight – first class, of course – is another question. The Emir of Qatar is a monarch, and in monarchies, protocol is usually followed even more strictly than elsewhere. If Steinmeier arrives earlier than planned, he cannot expect the host to throw his protocol out the window. In fact, Steinmeier stood demonstratively and for a long time at the door of his plane, partly with a pained expression on his face and crossed arms. It is absurd to turn this situation into a show of power by the Emir or a deliberate insult to Germany, as some media outlets do. The Sheikh and his protocol behaved completely correctly. They strictly adhered to the agreements. If anyone was disrespectful or foolish – if at all – it was not the Qataris, but rather the Federal President with his behavior. In case of early arrival, one does not wait indefinitely at the door, but waits respectfully inside until the agreed time. Whether Steinmeier expected special treatment just because his plane not only did not fail, but even arrived early, I cannot judge. Maybe he is just a very impatient person and couldn’t wait for the welcoming committee. While his behavior may not have been particularly polite, it was by no means scandalous. The fact is that a non-event is being blown out of proportion here. And the reactions say more about our media than about Steinmeier and the Qataris.
