Today, they are among the most performed compositions for a solo string instrument – here is Cello Suite No. 1 in G in two versions. The Suite No. 1 consists of: Prelude in G major Allemande in G major Courante in 3/4 time in G major Sarabande in 3/4 time in G major Minuet I in G major – II in G minor – I Gigue in 6/8 time in G major First heard on the Chapman Stick by Rodrigo Serrão, followed by a second version with Mischa Maisky (cello). The Chapman Stick essentially consists of a large fretboard with 8 to 12 strings and two pickups, Rodrigo Serrão plays one with 10 strings. The basic version of this instrument was developed by Emmett H. Chapman in the late 1960s. There are an estimated 3,000 Stick players worldwide who experiment with this new musical instrument. Johann Sebastian Bach probably wrote these suites in the 1710s, and although they were forgotten for a long time, they were rediscovered in the 20th century and gained great popularity.
