After the approval of the members of the train drivers‘ union GDL for indefinite strikes, GDL chairman Claus Weselsky is taking a step back: „We will carry out strikes for three to a maximum of five days. They will hurt and make the board of directors of the railway think,“ said the chairman of the train drivers‘ union to the Rheinische Post on Thursday. According to him, an indefinite strike with regard to the customers of Deutsche Bahn and the economic consequences is „not acceptable.“ In principle, there will be no new strike by train drivers at Deutsche Bahn until January 7th. With regard to the negotiating partner Deutsche Bahn, the GDL chairman demanded that Minister of Transport Volker Wissing (FDP) should „fire this board of directors“ or at least „question them.“ Weselsky described the reaction of the management to the result of the strike ballot as „outrageous.“ He also demanded: „Wissing should cut the bonuses of the board and finally set measurable and short-term goals. Then we can talk about bonuses again.“ The GDL had only announced the result of its strike ballot on Tuesday in order to enforce the GDL’s demands. 97 percent of its members voted in favor – this also makes indefinite strikes possible – a five-day strike last occurred in 2015. The GDL intends to announce strikes at least 48 hours in advance. On Tuesday, Weselsky threatened with a strike from January 8th if the management of the railway did not respond to the union’s demands by then.
