Johann Georg Albrechtsberger – Beethovens Lehrer

Published On: 7. Januar 2024 2:48

Epoch Times 6. Januar 2024 Johann Georg Albrechtsberger (1736 – 1809) was an Austrian music theorist, composer – and Beethoven’s teacher. Here is his Symphony in C (1768). The recording was made as part of the „Project for the Restoration of the Works of Johann Michael Haydn and other neglected composers.“ 1. Allegro 0:00 2. Andante 5:51 3. Presto 7:59 Johann Georg Albrechtsberger sang with the choirboys at Stift Klosterneuburg at the age of seven, later as a choirboy at Stiftsgymnasium Melk. After 1735, he met Joseph Haydn in Vienna and worked as an „extremely talented“ organist in various cities. Mozart called him „extremely talented“ and considered his playing to be the standard by which other organists should be measured. In 1772, Emperor Joseph II appointed him as the second court organist in Vienna – and this, even though his father was „only“ a farmer and cart driver. In his last months of life, Mozart wished for Albrechtsberger to be his adjunct at the cathedral choir master at St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna on May 9, 1791. This happened, and he later also took over the position of cathedral choir master. Among his students were Ludwig van Beethoven, Carl Czerny, Johann Nepomuk Hummel, Conradin Kreutzer, and Franz Xaver Mozart (the second surviving child of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart). At the end of his life, he was recognized as „perhaps the greatest organist in the world.“ Albrechtsberger composed over 280 church works, 278 pieces for keyboard instruments, almost 200 secular instrumental pieces, and chamber music for the imperial family (Joseph II played the cello and loved fugues). Before settling permanently in Vienna, his most original music was created, experimenting with unusual instrumentations and special effects. For example, he composed several pieces for the Jew’s harp and incorporated melodies from contemporary Austrian folk music into the Viennese classical style. The „Project for the Restoration of Works by Johann Michael Haydn and other neglected composers“ uses a digital orchestra as part of the software combination „Sibelius + Note Performer 3“. The sole purpose is to promote and enjoy unpublished music by Johann Michael Haydn. Composers who were in any way connected to him are also included
