Navalny ruft zu Protesten am Wahltag gegen Putin auf

Published On: 2. Februar 2024 5:53

Jailed Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny has called on Russians to protest against Vladimir Putin during the upcoming presidential election. Navalny, who is currently serving a 19-year sentence in a remote Arctic prison, urged his supporters to head to the polling stations on election day and form queues to show their opposition to Putin. He believes that this demonstration of the country’s mood will be a powerful statement against the Kremlin boss. Navalny emphasized that this form of protest is legal and safe, and the authorities will not be able to prevent it.

Navalny’s call for protest comes as Putin is expected to be re-elected for another six-year term in a tightly controlled poll scheduled for 15-17 March. Protests against the regime are effectively illegal in Russia, but Navalny sees the act of voting against Putin as a legitimate form of protest that cannot be stopped. He has encouraged his supporters to vote for any candidate except Putin in the election.

Critics argue that Putin’s long tenure in power, censorship, strict anti-dissent laws, and the imprisonment of Kremlin critics have suppressed the true extent of opposition to him. Navalny’s arrest in 2021, following his return to Russia from Germany where he received medical treatment for a nerve agent poisoning, has further fueled discontent. His team has accused a Kremlin assassination squad of carrying out the attack.

Navalny’s wife and some of his associates in exile have expressed support for Boris Nadezhdin, a surprise pro-peace campaigner, as an alternative candidate. However, the Kremlin has repeatedly claimed that Russian society is united behind Putin. As Putin enters his next six-year term, he will have been in power for over three decades as either president or prime minister
