The ILWU’s recent actions, or lack thereof, on the issue of Palestine are a betrayal of its history of militant solidarity with oppressed peoples around the world. The decision to block a resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza is a shameful capitulation to pro-Israel forces within the union and a rejection of the principles of international solidarity that the ILWU has long stood for.
It is clear that the ILWU leadership, under Willie Adams, is more concerned with cozying up to the powers that be than standing up for justice and human rights. This is a dangerous path to take, as it not only betrays the union’s members and the principles it was founded on, but also undermines the struggle for justice and liberation for the Palestinian people.
It is up to rank-and-file members of the ILWU to hold their leadership accountable and demand that the union take a principled stand in support of the Palestinian people. The ILWU has a proud history of militant action and solidarity, and it is time for its members to reclaim that legacy and stand on the right side of history. The Palestinian people are counting on us
