Former Head Of Twitter Security Warns Company Likely Infiltrated By Foreign Intelligence Agents
A CNN report published Tuesday highlighted the claims of a former Twitter executive who claims members of foreign intelligence agencies may be infiltrating the social media giant
The whistleblower, former head of Twitter security Peiter “Mudge” Zatko, issued a 200-page disclosure accusing company executives of trying to prevent vulnerabilities from being made public.
The disclosure was sent last month to Congress and several federal agencies, according to CNN.
According to Zatko, security flaws at the company present a threat to U.S. national security and Democracy as a whole.
For example, the whistleblower said some employees currently working for Twitter may be agents of foreign intelligence services.
A Twitter employee named Ahmad Abouammo was already found guilty earlier this month of spying on behalf of Saudi Arabia.
Zatko also claimed the company misled Elon Musk about the number of bots on the site during his attempt to purchase the platform.
He said the Twitter board is also being kept in the dark regarding the number of bots and the dangerous security flaws.
One security issue is that too many low-level employees have access to functions that should be reserved for more trusted workers.
“All engineers had access. There was no logging of who went into the environment or what they did,” Zatko wrote in the disclosure. “Nobody knew where data lived or whether it was critical, and all engineers had some form of critical access to the production environment.”
After supposedly making an attempt at warning fellow Twitter executives about security vulnerabilities back in January, Zatko was fired.
Following the release of Zatko’s disclosure, Elon Musk attorney Alex Spiro told CNN, “We have already issued a subpoena for Mr. Zatko, and we found his exit and that of other key employees curious in light of what we have been finding.”
