Slim hope of negotiated solution in Ukraine, warns top Russian diplomat

Russia’s permanent representative to the United Nations in Geneva, Gennady Gatilov, has dampened hopes of a negotiated solution to the war in Ukraine, warning that it could turn into a long conflict.

This emerges from an interview with Gatilov in the Financial Times, according to the BBC.

Gatilov claimed that Kyiv and Moscow had been ‘very close’ to a deal to end the conflict in April. He accused Western nations of prolonging the conflict ‘until the last Ukrainian’.

The senior diplomat also ruled out any direct meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

While praising the efforts of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who was maintaining a close working relationship with Putin, for ‘trying his best’ to facilitate dialogue between Russia and Ukraine, Gatilov warned: ‘The more this conflict goes on, the more difficult it will be to have a diplomatic solution.’
