Germany signs deal to give ownership of Benin Bronze artefacts to Nigeria

Published On: 28. August 2022 4:00

This week the Germany signed an agreement with Nigeria to transfer ownership to Nigeria of the Benin Bronzes, a collection of bronze artefacts looted by British troops in the 19th century.

The Bronzes are a collection of sculptures and plaques, the oldest of which date back to the 13th century, and have been considered by many as some of the most important cultural and historical artefacts in Nigerian history.

The agreement signed between the Foundation of Prussian Cultural Heritage (SPK) and Nigeria’s National Commission for Museums and Monuments (NCMM) covers 512 objects which ended up in Berlin.

After their capture by the British, the Bronzes ended up in museums across Europe and the United States. In recent years European museums and Universities have signed agreements to return various items to Nigeria.

‘This represents the future concerning the artefacts issue; a future of collaboration among museums, a future of according respect and dignity to the legitimate requests of other nations and traditional institutions,’ said NCMM’s Abba Isa Tijani.
