South Korea and Russia collaborate to build first Egyptian nuclear reactor
A South Korean company, in collaboration with Russia’s state run nuclear energy company Rosatom, will soon begin construction on Egypt’s first nuclear power reactor.
Unlike many of its neighbours, Egypt has relatively little in the way of oil and gas reserves, and the Egyptian government has been seeking alternatives to fossil fuels in recent years. Earlier this year the nuclear power project was approved by Egypt’s Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Authority.
The project is also set to further cement ties between South Korea and Egypt, which have in recent years been developing a strong relationship.
The South Korean ambassador in Cairo praised the move as South Korea’s successful entry into the international nuclear power market.
