Introduction

Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, has invited King Charles to visit him at Her Majesty’s Prison Belmarsh. Assange is currently being held at the prison while he awaits extradition to the United States. The invitation was extended in a letter that was sent to the King’s office.

The Letter

In the letter to King Charles, Assange wrote that he was “deeply concerned about the state of justice in the United Kingdom” and that he believed his case was “an example of the abuse of process and the erosion of the rule of law.” He also expressed his belief that the United States’ extradition request was politically motivated and that he would not receive a fair trial if he was sent there.

Assange’s invitation to King Charles is not the first time he has reached out to a member of the royal family. In 2018, he sent a letter to Prince William, asking him to use his influence to help secure his release from the embassy. The letter was delivered to Kensington Palace, but it is not known if Prince William ever saw it.

The Case Against Assange

Assange is facing 18 charges in the United States, including conspiracy to commit computer intrusion and violation of the Espionage Act. If he is extradited and convicted, Assange could face up to 175 years in prison.
