Britische Autosendung Top Gear vorerst pausiert: BBC

Published On: 21. November 2023 20:10

Motoring show Top Gear, one of the BBC’s most successful global exports, will be put on hold for an indefinite period of time following a serious accident involving host Andrew Flintoff, the broadcaster announced on Tuesday. The former England cricket captain, who is now 45 years old, sustained facial injuries in the crash that occurred last December and has only recently reappeared in public. The BBC initially paused production immediately after the accident, stating that it would be inappropriate to continue and that a health and safety review would be conducted. The show has now been shelved indefinitely. In a statement, the BBC said, „Given the exceptional circumstances, the BBC has decided to rest the UK show for the foreseeable future. We will provide further updates on this matter in the near future. We understand that this news will be disappointing for fans, but it is the right decision to make.“ The statement also clarified that all other Top Gear activities, such as international formats, digital content, magazines, and licensing, will continue as usual. The show is broadcast in over 150 countries and has local versions in 11 countries, including the United States and France. Previous presenters Jeremy Clarkson, James May, and Richard Hammond became household names through the show before leaving to host „The Grand Tour“ on Amazon. Flintoff, who joined the show as a host in June 2019, was involved in another accident when he crashed into a market stall. Last month, the BBC announced that it had reached a financial settlement with Flintoff regarding the accident from last year. Although the exact amount was not disclosed by BBC Studios, the commercial arm of the British broadcaster, it is reportedly £9 million ($11 million)
