China’s military has declared its determination to suppress any attempts to promote Taiwan’s independence, just one day before a crucial election on the self-governed island. The Chinese People’s Liberation Army has stated that it will take all necessary measures to firmly crush any form of „Taiwan independence“ attempts. The defence ministry spokesperson, Zhang Xiaogang, accused Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party of pushing the island towards dangerous conditions by purchasing arms from the United States. Taiwan, with a population of 23 million, is separated from China by a narrow strait and is considered a strategically important island due to its production of vital semiconductors.

The upcoming presidential election in Taiwan is being closely monitored worldwide, as the winner will be responsible for managing the island’s relationship with an increasingly assertive China.
