Über Baerbock: „Das ist kein Außenpolitik, das ist eine egoistische Reise

Berliner Zeitung: „Experienced German diplomats are raising eyebrows behind closed doors. They say, after building trust in the host country, sometimes over the course of years, the Minister comes and shows where the moral hammer hangs. German diplomats on the ground have to deal with the consequences. After the third Mai Tai, they hear what people think of the lady from Berlin.“ IMAGO Only toxic men could have written an article with such a headline. Two such men did so in the Berliner Zeitung (BZ) on February 10th: Thomas Fasbender, PhD, who worked as a manager and entrepreneur in Moscow from 1992 to 2015. He is the author of „Wladimir Putin. Eine politische Biographie“ and „Das unheimliche Jahrhundert“. And Moritz Eichhorn: He studied International Relations and Philosophy in Great Britain. He is a political editor at FAZ and FAS. Since September 2023, he has been deputy editor-in-chief of BZ. I agree that Twitter content may be displayed to me. Fasbender and Eichhorn dissect the former Green chancellor candidate, frequent flyer, self-proclaimed international law expert, and feminist-inspired world savior with very expandable geography, history, geometry, physics, and English skills. For example, Fasbender and Eichhorn note that Baerbock’s favorite word is „must.“ The hospitals in Gaza „must be able to function.“ The Hamas terror „must stop immediately.“ Addressing Moscow: „The bombing must stop.“ Furthermore: „Drowning in the Mediterranean must stop.“ „We must work on UN reforms.“ „COP28 should have gone one step further.“ Regarding the supply chain law: „Europe must be able to rely on Germany.“ Regarding Sudan: „We must increase pressure on both sides.“ Baerbock’s human rights imperialism! But, according to Fasbender and Eichhorn, „moralizing foreign policy is a zero-sum game.“ Baerbock consists only of categorical imperatives that even Little Erna could sign. But what do they achieve? Well, with approval ratings of 35 percent, Baerbock performs significantly worse than most foreign ministers in the past, even the tailor-made Heiko Maas had better ratings with 47 percent in 2018. But Baerbock is still doing better than Chancellor Scholz (20 percent), opposition leader Friedrich Merz (29 percent), or party colleague Robert Habeck (26 percent). Only Defense Minister Boris Pistorius is „more popular“ (50 percent). Baerbock’s ineffective „politics“ Fasbender and Eichhorn write: „Baerbock’s appeals go unheard or even cause damage, as with Baerbock’s public statement that Chinese President Xi Jinping is a dictator. It is considered impossible for Baerbock to be received, let alone taken seriously, in China. And her statements have not changed the situation in China.“ So the problem is that all of Baerbock’s imperatives have no effect. Why? Because Germany’s foreign minister is not taken seriously in the world. What a highly intellectual, defeat-plagued footballer could say about most German foreign ministers in the 21st century applies to her: first, we had no luck, then bad luck came along. There are pictures upon pictures: Baerbock always on the gangway – like on the catwalk: during a refueling stop in Djibouti; visiting refugees in South Sudan; at COP28 in Dubai; Baerbock live and not just via Twitter/X in Israel and Ukraine; at the border between South and North Korea; in Nigeria; scattering rose petals in New Delhi in memory of Mahatma Gandhi; at the UN in New York; carrying watermelons in Ouallam in Niger; in Palau in the South Pacific. And so on and so forth… In 2023 alone, she (CO2-neutral?) went on 73 trips abroad, and in January 2024, she went on 13. For once, you can rely on Wikipedia for this information. Baerbock’s problem: Predictability in her simplicity Baerbock is very predictable in her intellect, emotionality, and rhetoric. Fasbender and Eichhorn also write: „Her counterparts know what to expect from her conversations and press conferences. But she doesn’t seem to care. What seems more important to her is the impression she makes in news photos and on the evening news: she is seen barefoot on the Palau Islands in the Pacific, carrying water jugs in Niger, or disembarking from a military plane with aid supplies for Gaza in Egypt. Results on the ground are secondary… Realpolitik – the bargaining and balancing of common and conflicting interests, including small secrets and turning a blind eye – is not her thing.“ Max Weber would say: She practices value ethics instead of responsibility ethics from her high horse. And instead of realpolitik. See Baerbock’s almost legendary press conference with Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang in April 2023. She criticized her colleague twice – China’s restraint in the Ukraine war, China’s Taiwan policy – and he responded unimpressed both times. The third time – civil society and human rights – Qin made it clear: „What China needs least is a teacher from the West.“ Fasbender and Eichhorn conclude: „Experienced German diplomats are raising eyebrows
