Demokratische Illusionen: Eliteeinheit über Israel
tory against calls for a ceasefire in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict? The answer lies in the influence of the pro-Israel lobby and the interests of the capitalist class.
The pro-Israel lobby has a significant presence in US politics and mobilizes quickly against critics of Israeli policies. It cuts across both the Democratic and Republican parties, exerting pressure on elected officials to maintain support for Israel. Political donations from pro-Israel individuals and organizations play a crucial role in shaping the boundaries of acceptable political behavior for parties and their candidates.
The capitalist class, which includes large campaign donors and industry blocs, also has a vested interest in maintaining support for Israel. US industries, particularly those in the military-industrial complex, benefit from contracts with the Israeli government and the US military aid to Israel. There is little incentive for these industries to break with pro-Israel policies.
In contrast, there is no significant industry bloc that supports Palestinian liberation movements such as the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement. The lack of support from the business community further reinforces the status quo of US support for Israel.
Given these dynamics, political parties prioritize the interests of their donors and the capitalist class over the opinions of the average voter. The overwhelming public support for a ceasefire in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is largely ignored because it does not align with the interests of the pro-Israel lobby and the capitalist class.
In essence, bourgeois parties function as quasi-state institutions that articulate the demands of the capitalist class and serve the interests of maintaining US global hegemony. This requires support for the military-industrial complex, securing alliances, and maintaining the status quo in US-Israel relations.
Therefore, the near unity within the Democratic and Republican parties on support for Israel can be understood as a result of the influence of the pro-Israel lobby and the interests of the capitalist class. The opinions of the average voter have little impact on legislation and party policies, which are primarily shaped by the donor class and the capitalist elite

Democratic Illusions: Elite Unity on Israel
Photograph Source: U.S. Embassy Tel Aviv – CC BY 2.0 A very strange vision for these uncertain times appeared on stage in Washington, DC on Nov. 14: House Speaker Mike Johnson joined hands with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. They stood together, along with Sen. Jodi Ernst, to celebrate Israel’s genocidal war on and ethnic cleansing of Palestinians in Gaza. The handholding underlines the lack of daylight between bourgeois parties at each other’s throats in this era of partisan polarization. An eerie understanding arises that perhaps the last unifying force in America is not just war, but war crimes. Awash in media that portrays the political leadership of the United States as mortal enemies
